Day 1: Pyramids of Giza, Sphinx & the Grand Egyptian Museum
Welcome to Cairo! Your Egyptologist meets you at your hotel and you drive straight to the Giza plateau. Pyramids of Giza Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, with a photo stop at the panoramic viewpoint. Your first stop is the legendary Giza Plateau, home to the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre and the Pyramid of Menkaure. Great Pyramid of Khufu The Great Pyramid was constructed during Egypt's 4th Dynasty for Pharaoh Khufu. For thousands of years it was the tallest monumental structure in the world and remains the only surviving wonder of the traditional Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Your Egyptologist will explain the pyramid's construction, purpose, religious symbolism and the remarkable organization required to build such an enormous monument. Pyramid of Khafre Continue to the Pyramid of Khafre, which still preserves some of its original smooth limestone casing near the top. The pyramid is closely associated with the Great Sphinx and forms part of an impressive royal funerary complex. Pyramid of Menkaure See the Pyramid of Menkaure, the smallest of the three main pyramids at Giza. Together, the three pyramids demonstrate the architectural ambition and engineering capabilities of ancient Egypt's Old Kingdom. The Great Sphinx & Valley Temple The guardian of the plateau and the granite temple beside it. Continue to the Great Sphinx, one of Egypt's most recognizable monuments. The colossal statue combines the body of a lion with a human head and is traditionally associated with royal authority and protection. Your guide will explain the Sphinx's symbolism and its relationship to the Giza pyramid complex. Optional Lunch After exploring the pyramids, you can enjoy an optional lunch at a local restaurant. Choose according to your preference between local Egyptian and other dining options. Papyrus & Traditional Egyptian Crafts Continue your experience with a visit where you can learn about traditional papyrus production and discover how ancient Egyptians created one of the world's earliest writing materials. You may also learn about traditional Egyptian perfumes. Grand Egyptian Museum The grand staircase, the colossus of Ramses II and the Tutankhamun collection. The world's largest archaeological museum dedicated to a single civilization. It features thousands of priceless artifacts, including the complete treasures of Tutankhamun and the impressive Grand Staircase lined with monumental statues. Optional Egyptian Museum in Cairo Continue to downtown Cairo and Tahrir Square to visit the Egyptian Museum. The museum houses one of the world's great collections of ancient Egyptian antiquities. Among its most famous treasures are the spectacular objects associated with King Tutankhamun, together with royal mummies and countless artifacts spanning thousands of years of Egyptian history. Your Egyptologist guide will help you understand the historical importance of the collections and the civilization that created them. After the tour, return to your Cairo hotel. Learn about the architect Imhotep and the development of monumental stone construction. Depending on the selected entrance tickets and site conditions, additional tombs and monuments may be visited. Memphis open-air museum The colossal Ramses II statue and the alabaster sphinx. Continue to Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt. Before You Travel to Egypt
A quick checklist for a smoother arrival and more comfortable sightseeing.
Choose the season that suits you
October to April is usually more comfortable for long sightseeing days. Summer can be very hot, especially in Luxor and Aswan, so plan lighter schedules, shade and water breaks.
Check entry rules before you fly
Visa eligibility depends on your passport and can change. Confirm your requirements through Egypt’s official e-Visa portal or the nearest Egyptian embassy before travel.
Carry Egyptian Pounds
Cards are useful at many hotels and larger businesses, but small EGP notes are practical for tips, small purchases and everyday services.
Use sealed bottled water
Drink sealed bottled water and keep extra water with you during sightseeing, particularly on warm days and longer excursions.
Dress for heat and local customs
Light, breathable clothing, comfortable shoes, sun protection and a light layer are useful. Modest clothing is respectful at mosques, churches and traditional communities.
Know when to bargain
Friendly bargaining is common in bazaars and souks. Prices in fixed-price shops, hotels, restaurants and official ticket offices are generally not negotiated.

- Pay in EGP rather than USD — prices quoted in dollars are usually higher.
- Haggle politely in markets; start around half the first price.
- Buy water in supermarkets, not at monuments or hotels.
- Withdraw from bank ATMs (CIB, NBE, Banque Misr) for the best exchange rate.
