Three stops — the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, the Citadel of Salah al-Din, and the Coptic quarter of Old Cairo — give you Pharaonic, Islamic and Christian Egypt inside a single day, with almost no drive time between them. NMEC and Coptic Cairo are effectively neighbours in Fustat; the Citadel is 15–20 minutes uphill.
One commercial warning up front: this product overlaps heavily with the Coptic Cairo sheet you already have. Do not sell them as alternatives to the same client. Position this as the first-timer's Cairo day — the greatest-hits version for someone with 48 hours in Egypt — and keep the Coptic Cairo sheet as the deep-dive for repeat visitors, faith travellers and heritage groups who want Ben Ezra, the Cave Church and the Holy Family Trail treated properly. If you list them side by side on the same page with similar prices, you will cannibalise both.
Egypt is not one civilisation. It is a stack of them, and Cairo is the one city where you can walk the whole stack in a single day.
Begin in Fustat, in the cool grey galleries of the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, where the story runs from flint tools to the Coptic loom to the Islamic astrolabe — and then descends into a hushed, dimly lit hall where twenty-two pharaohs lie in the dark. Ramesses II is here. Hatshepsut is here. They were carried through the streets of Cairo in a golden parade in 2021 and they have not moved since.

Detailed Itinerary 08:15 — Hotel pickupCollection from any central Cairo, Zamalek, Garden City or Giza hotel. Head straight for Fustat before the city fully wakes. Ops note: from Giza allow 45–55 minutes; from downtown 25–30. Do not schedule pickup later than 08:30 — you lose the quiet hour at NMEC and pick up midday Citadel crowds instead. 09:00 — National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC)The museum opens at 09:00 and for the first hour it is close to empty. Start in the Main Hall, which is arranged thematically rather than chronologically — dawn of civilisation, the Nile, writing, state, society, beliefs — then take the ramp down into the Royal Mummies Hall. The lighting is deliberately low, the temperature and humidity are controlled, and the effect is closer to a crypt than a gallery. Twenty-two royal mummies from the 17th to 20th dynasties, eighteen kings and four queens, moved here from Tahrir in the April 2021 Golden Parade and permanently installed (World Museum Guide). Ops note: 2 hours. Hours 09:00–17:00 daily, last ticket 16:00; on Fridays there is a second evening shift 18:00–21:00, last ticket 20:00 (Magic Carpet Travel). Photography is banned inside the Mummies Hall and guards enforce it strictly — brief guests before entry, not after. Ticket price is the single biggest verification risk on this itinerary (see warnings below). 11:15 — Drive to the CitadelTwenty minutes uphill through Sayyida Zeinab and the Southern Cemetery. Good window for the guide to set up the Islamic chapter of the day. 11:40 — Citadel of Salah al-DinSaladin began the fortress in 1176 to defend Cairo against the Crusaders; it stayed the seat of Egyptian government for nearly seven centuries. One ticket covers everything inside the walls. Priority order: Mosque of Muhammad Ali (the Alabaster Mosque) — built 1828–1848 in deliberate imitation of Ottoman imperial style, clad in Egyptian alabaster, with the French clock in the courtyard that Louis-Philippe traded for the Luxor obelisk now standing in the Place de la Concorde. Shoes off, shoulders and knees covered, headscarves available at the door (Egypt Tours Group). Mosque of al-Nasir Muhammad — 1318–1335, Mamluk, and architecturally the more interesting of the two. The hypostyle hall is built from recycled columns with Pharaonic, Roman and Coptic capitals standing side by side, and the minarets carry Persian-influenced onion finials found nowhere else in Cairo (Egyptra). The terrace — the best free skyline in Cairo. On a clear winter morning the Giza pyramids are visible from here. Al-Gawhara Palace and the museums (Police, Military, Carriage) are included but skippable unless the guests are specifically interested. Better to spend the time on the terrace. Ops note: 2 to 2.5 hours. Hours 08:00–17:00, last entry 16:00, closing around 15:00 in Ramadan (Egyptra). Ticket 550 EGP adult / 275 EGP student, children under 6 free, all mosques and museums included — confirmed on the Ministry's own booking portal (egymonuments) and the MOTA price schedule (MOTA). Card only at the gate. There is very little shade — in summer this stop must move earlier or later. 14:00 — LunchLocal restaurant in the Fustat or Old Cairo area. Egyptian mezze, grilled meat or koshari, vegetarian on request. Ops note: 45–60 minutes. Contract a fixed per-head rate with a restaurant that pays you no commission and hides no charge. The moment a lunch stop doubles as a shopping stop, your reviews start mentioning it. 15:00 — Coptic CairoThe compound is pedestrian only, entered down a flight of steps beside Mar Girgis metro station. Inside: the Hanging Church (al-Muallaqa), suspended over the water gate of the Roman fortress of Babylon, its nave floor built across the gap between two towers; Abu Serga (St Sergius and Bacchus), built over the crypt where tradition holds the Holy Family sheltered; Ben Ezra Synagogue, where the Cairo Geniza — some 300,000 medieval Jewish manuscript fragments — was found in the 1890s; and the Greek Orthodox Church of St George, the only round church in Egypt. Ops note: 1.5 hours walking. All churches, the synagogue and the mosque are free and open 09:00– 16:00 (MOTA ticket schedule). No photography inside Ben Ezra; security screening at the gate; donations expected at each church. The Coptic Museum (280 EGP, card only, ticket office closes 16:00) is an optional add — it is excellent, but adding it turns 1.5 hours into 2.5 and pushes the bazaar into the dark. 17:00 — Khan el-KhaliliFounded as a caravanserai in 1382 and still the commercial heart of Fatimid Cairo. Drop guests at the al-Hussein end and let the guide walk them in — coppersmiths, spice merchants, inlaid boxes, the perfume alleys — then finish with mint tea or Turkish coffee at El Fishawy, trading continuously since 1773 and Naguib Mahfouz's old haunt (Egyptra). Ops note: 1 to 1.5 hours. Bazaar hours run roughly 09:30 to midnight, though most shops close Friday morning for prayers (Viacation). El Fishawy is effectively 24-hour (Wikipedia). Season October to April is the natural window: the Citadel terrace is comfortable, the skyline is clear and the pyramids are often visible from Mokattam. December and January are peak and NMEC fills by 11:00, so the 09:00 start earns its keep. May to September, the Citadel becomes the problem — exposed stone, no shade, midday temperatures above 38°C. In high summer, flip the order: NMEC first at 09:00, Old Cairo through the middle of the day where the lanes are narrow and shaded, and the Citadel from 15:30 for golden hour on the alabaster. It is a better photographic day anyway. Ramadan shortens Citadel hours to a mid-afternoon close and changes prayer rhythms at both mosques — check dates before you confirm a Ramadan departure, and shift the whole itinerary earlier.
