- Modest dress is required — shoulders and knees covered for all guests. Women should carry a light scarf for the mosques; headscarves are also available at the Alabaster Mosque door
- Shoes come off inside mosque prayer halls. Bring or wear socks
- Comfortable closed walking shoes: uneven stone, steps and cobbles all day
- No photography inside the Royal Mummies Hall or inside Ben Ezra Synagogue
- Bring passports or photo ID; security screening at the Citadel and Old Cairo gates
- Bring an ISIC card if you have one — it halves museum entry
- Small Egyptian notes for church donations, toilet attendants and tips; site gates are card-only, so guests do not need cash for tickets
- Sunscreen, hat and a refillable bottle; the Citadel terraces have almost no shade
- Haggling at Khan el-Khalili is expected and friendly — start around a third of the asking price
- Not recommended for guests with serious mobility limitations: the Citadel involves significant walking on slopes, and the Coptic compound is stairs-and-lanes only
Season October to April is the natural window: the Citadel terrace is comfortable, the skyline is clear and the pyramids are often visible from Mokattam. December and January are peak and NMEC fills by 11:00, so the 09:00 start earns its keep. May to September, the Citadel becomes the problem — exposed stone, no shade, midday temperatures above 38°C. In high summer, flip the order: NMEC first at 09:00, Old Cairo through the middle of the day where the lanes are narrow and shaded, and the Citadel from 15:30 for golden hour on the alabaster. It is a better photographic day anyway. Ramadan shortens Citadel hours to a mid-afternoon close and changes prayer rhythms at both mosques — check dates before you confirm a Ramadan departure, and shift the whole itinerary earlier. All prices, opening hours and access rules reflect published 2026 figures at the time of writing and are subject to change without notice; the NMEC ticket price in particular is disputed across sources.
