Three Operational Warnings One — Sohag governorate escort rules must be verified before every departure Dendera sits in Qena governorate and is entirely routine. Abydos sits in Sohag, and Sohag has historically been subject to tourist convoy and police escort arrangements that Luxor, Qena and Aswan no longer are. Reports on current requirements conflict: one advisory aggregator claims armed escorts remain mandatory for groups visiting archaeological sites outside Cairo, Alexandria and the Red Sea governorates, while thousands of day trips run to Abydos each season with nothing more than checkpoint stops. The UK FCDO's Egypt advisory does not restrict travel to these areas (GOV.UK), and Germany's Federal Foreign Office maintains a partial advisory for Egypt that should be read before you publish (Auswärtiges Amt). Do not resolve this from a website — resolve it with your Luxor ground handler, in writing, for each departure date. The specific questions to ask: does a police escort attach at the Qena–Sohag boundary; is advance notification of vehicle registration and passenger names required and by when; and does the requirement change for vehicles carrying more than a set number of passengers. Then build the answer into your booking cut-off. If notification is required, you need the same kind of lead time you already apply to your Amarna and Beni Hassan product. Two — sell the duration honestly or do not sell it at all Six hours of driving. Twelve hours door to door. This is not a tour that a guest can be talked into and then discover. Put "approximately 6 hours of driving across a 12-hour day" in bold in the listing itself, not just in the confirmation email, and in the same breath explain why it is worth it. Guests who choose it with open eyes come back thrilled; guests who were sold a "day trip" come back furious, and the review they leave will be about the car, not the temples. Three practical rules that cost you nothing and protect the review: never run this product in a vehicle without verified rear air conditioning; schedule two comfort stops on the outbound leg rather than one; and brief the driver that this is not a schedule to be beaten. And offer the Dendera half-day alternative in the same conversation — some clients will take it gratefully, and that is a sale you would otherwise have lost entirely. Three — manage two specific expectation traps The Osireion cannot be entered. Guests who have seen it on television arrive expecting to walk down into it, and cannot. There is a widely-repeated claim online of a special-access permit for a limited number of visitors at an extraordinary fee (Inside Egypt) — treat that as unverified and never quote a figure to a client. If you have a client who genuinely wants it, take it to the Supreme Council of Antiquities through your handler as a bespoke request with a long lead time, and quote nothing until you have written confirmation. The Dendera Zodiac on the roof is a replica. The original sandstone relief was removed by French agents in 1821 and hangs in the Louvre in Paris (Holidays Beckon). Tell the guest before they climb, not after. Handled well this becomes one of the best stories of the day — the blackened ceiling in that chapel is soot from fires lit by people sheltering in the temple long after its gods were gone, and that soot is part of why the carvings beneath survived at all. Handled badly it feels like a bait-and-switch.
Guest Brief for the Confirmation Email
- Pick-up 06:00. We will arrange a breakfast box with your hotel — please confirm 24 hours ahead.
- This is a 12-hour day with approximately 6 hours of driving. Abydos is 170 km north of Luxor on rural roads. We tell you this plainly because it is the single thing guests wish they had known. The temples are extraordinary; the journey is long.
- Bring your passport. The route crosses two governorate boundaries and checkpoints may ask to see it.
- Both temple interiors are cool and shaded, but the approaches and the Dendera roof are fully exposed. Hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, closed walking shoes.
- Dendera involves a stair climb to the roof and a descent into the crypts. The crypts are narrow and low. Tell us in advance if either is difficult and we will plan around it.
- The Osireion at Abydos is viewed from above only — visitors cannot enter it.
- The zodiac on the Dendera roof is a replica. The original has been in the Louvre since 1821. Your guide will tell you the whole story, which is better than the object.
- Mobile phone photography is free at both sites. Flash is not permitted indoors. Professional equipment may attract a permit fee.
- Carry some Egyptian pounds in cash for refreshments and gratuities. Card acceptance is unreliable outside Luxor.
- We make no shopping stops. If you would like to buy something, tell your guide and we will find somewhere honest.
Season October to April, and within that November, December, February and March are the strongest. Six hours in a vehicle across Upper Egypt in summer is not a holiday — Luxor averages 39–42°C from May through September, and the road north offers no relief. Several serious operators simply will not run the full Abydos day in July and August, and that is the right call; offer the Dendera half-day with an 06:00 start instead, which gets guests back to their hotel before the worst of the afternoon. Early morning is best at both sites for light and for solitude, and since you are at Abydos by nine and Dendera in mid-afternoon, you get the first and — per photographers who work these sites — the second-best light of the day. Dendera is rarely crowded in any season, which is much of its charm.
